When to Fight and When to Surrender

The most difficult lesson to learn is when to fight and when to surrender.  We were confident going into this matchup. Perhaps too much. We had not invaded in a while and many fingers are itching.

Our matches increased in difficulty as our core team grew in strength and unity. We want from conquering two to one to barely defending. We remained vigilant and grew close as friends.

It is not unusual to develop close relationships in games. We are no exception. We have fun just chatting and catching up with each others lives.

I’m truly blessed to know and fight at their sides. Now you can get in the action with us.

KVK 29

I scouted our opponents first thing and soon discovered we were facing two beasts. We had no interest in straying from our forest but were curious.

Since we couldn’t know what we’d face we played safe as always in round one. No one in the forest and minimal troops in towers. We wanted to protect against severe losses and be portable if invading was favorable.

All was quiet for several hours. Then touchdown! Visitors from k218. We expected them to invade but hoped they would take on k329 first. Nope.

We are playing it slow. Discussing options. It’s always a game of cat or mouse and sometimes you don’t know if you are the prey or predator.

We were the prey. By defending in a difficult match we were rewarded with an even more difficult one. If we had been conquered and not allied with k277 we may have lost our throne and ended with a fair match. But as always allies proved beneficial.

Yeah. So suicide. We all have pain points and until you reach it you don’t stop. We discuss these in discord and anyone an tap out with zero judgment. Unless you’re in the throne. Tap out of that before you enter because once you do you cannot leave unless the bubble throws you off or you are massacred.

Its one march. No big deal. If you aren’t willing to lose it do not send it. Towers included. It is rare that we evacuate a throne and only if it gives us a strategic edge. Towers are evacuated most often but we’ll usually take a hit or two if we are unsure of stats. Even a loss gives good information on what you have to battle.

It is for that reason you should never mega or put strong stats as tower lead in a new match up. You should use enough troops to get a report and the more people you have in each will share the death burden.

We didn’t. But as you saw scouts yield accurate data if you know how to read them. We also knew we were all going to die by speed hitting. We lost but we didn’t give up.

Sure we ended up surrendering but in the end it was wiser than our k329 opponents. I’ll cover their match in another post. But let’s just say we didn’t want to lose all our troops to lose the throne. To what end but to cripple ourselves and gain nothing in return.

I’m fact our k277 ally Jun was beneficial in the negotiations. He knew the king of k218, called Mega Nugget by us in k207, and took our demands for a peaceful surrender to him.

We had lost a lot in the battle and over a short span of time. 45 minutes. So much by the king that he acquired the big gold ressurecton pack. What we needed was time. To gather the rss people were short and speed to train on the buff. k218 agreed to delay in conquering and we abdicated the throne.

At times we regretted it but the pros outweighed the cons for us. By not gaining any throne this matchup we are resetting our difficulty. We are also able to grow as a kingdom. In addition we get a vacation. It has been hard core KVK for many many months and some significant others of certain gamers are starting to feel the effects.

Plus I get a nice vacation from planning and I can focus on my castle. And sleep in. That is what I will enjoy most!

Tower Hockey

Allies

Sometimes there are things I cannot share because it may affect the rest of a match in KVK in unfavorable ways.

We were matched with k133 and k277 for KVK 26 – 28. Both proper beasts in comparison to k207. It was our hard/impossible match. Usually we lose 2 out of 3 defenses on these match ups. This time we are proud that we defended our kingdom and won the throne all three rounds. It is expected that our next match will be easy/equal. These are our invasion rounds and quite fun.

The untold truth of this match is that we allied with k277 in KVK 26. When Moe, Larry, Curly, and Shemp aka Rider, Sampson, Tornado, and Wood in k133 invaded k207 early on we gave them a fight. Then they left us, slightly wounded, and invaded k277. I immediately added k277’s strongest, Guardian, as a contact and we exchanged quick hellos.

Then he asked if we could ally. We created a room in game and in Line. It was great. K277 has a similar culture to us and out of the three kingdoms were the bigger beast – imo – this matchup. You don’t turn down that type of alliance in KVK after being manhandled by the other kingdom.

Guardian of k277 proves the point I’ve tried to make to others and slaughtered k133.

Stats > SH

It was amusing to see a sh32 murder sh35’s. He is now sh33 and as others should, he maxes out before upgrading a stronghold. He is also a decent guy and we had a lot of fun together.

KVK 27

Guardian was not on the k277 throne when KVK started. It seemed another alliance was given a chance to see what KVK was all about. We were told by Guardian that his 277 alliance which held the kingdom would not interfere with our fun in their kingdom. Were given two hours to invade for some Dragon xp before he would start their throne timer for defense.

The issue we faced was we didn’t have sufficient troops to stack everything and invade. We did not want to leave ourselves open to attacks from k133 but also wanted to have a little fun.

We sent Unicorn Police, Unicorn Porn, Cunning Stunt, and Scrubalotimus to take towers. These are just farms of our core KVK group and they often provide comedic fun to our invasions. Due to technical difficulties I only captured Scrub.

Then Game decided that he’d port over to lead a mega rally and brought his farm KK to join. I was unable to join on Purls as I was defending k207; however I sent my alt sh26 H.Q. Dew was not in a building and neither was another core player The Dude. Dew brought his alt NomNom as well.

Game started with a solo hit and that did not end well. We knew the stats but were distracted and it didn’t register until the hit was done. Just one of those things.

In the end, we had some fun and still managed to keep k207 secure. After defending we visited k133 with Guardian and played tower hockey for some time. Because we could. Because they messed with us first. They failed to do their research and lacked the experience required to lead a successful invasion. I hope they learned lessons this KVK and wish them the best on future matches.

KVK Mistakes – Lesson One + Lesson Two

Oops

So this KVK round was disappointing but not in the way you’d imagine. I’ve been playing with various encoder setups because the Android Game Tools only lets you record to internal memory. This means I get maybe 4 hours of video and it kills my phone.

So I tried one called AZ Screen Recorder. I downloaded it just before KVK because real life had been busy. It had good reviews and my first tests were great… it allowed me to steam to YouTube privately and that video was saved on YouTube not my phone. For future editing.

Perhaps I had the settings wrong because the quality was shameful on the action I did capture. It is the action I missed that is more upsetting. It stopped recording all by itself after an hour.

So I tapped record again and this time 2 minutes. I checked my internal storage… nope it’s not taking space on my phone. That was the original thought. No time restrictions were active.

So in a nutshell I did not get any of the good stuff on camera and what I did get is so poor that I don’t think anything is salvageable. That’s okay. Lesson learned.

So no decent YouTube action for this KVK; however there is a gem from Round 25 you may enjoy. I’ll write another post when that is ready.

Back to KVK

Since KoA is fond of rotating between easy/equal matches to hard/impossible matches we knew that conquering this time may be off the list. No worries. We like our weekends too.

I created my spies and ventured into the unknown. We review leaderboards in each kingdom. Lord, dragon, power, stronghold; and evaluate from there. Rarely in a new hard match do we attempt to poke the bear.

All was calm the first hour and half. Everyone minded their own throne. We thought, maybe it’ll be a boring KVK. We had no real intent to invade after my spy run. Unless opportunity presented itself.

Then this happened. Let’s call them Moe, Larry, and Curly. We did because it was amusing.

Three sh35 against a sh33, 32, and a handful of 31s. Obviously we had 30s and down helping but we’re talking about t11 vs t10 here.

Spoiler Alert: t10 won.

We gave the good fight for an hour. They knocked North and West towers down after several solo hits and then rallied South. We pulled South because senseless death is counterproductive. East was solid and they weren’t taking that without a fight. Instead Tornado rallied the throne. It hurt but it wasn’t enough to reset us. It wasn’t a mega.

I guess that didn’t sit right with them. We were a bigger bite than they thought and not going down easy. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Then Wood aka Shemp pulled from 133’s throne and popped over to 207 to lead a mega rally on our throne. Yes. Their strongest player left their throne defenseless. We had not seen his stats but we had no doubt he was the power player.

So in true 207 style our fearless leader said, well if they think they can reset our throne I’m going to reset theirs. And he did. It was grand.

Of course ours was reset too because Slak had 207 locked in a mega garrison. We had no intent to sacrifice troops and the decision was made for Slak to pull and port to reset 133.

Lesson One: Do not leave your home throne vulnerable. Defense is Priority.

So we kept them busy with tower hockey. Tornado stacked the throne and Samson attempted to keep four towers from firing by his lonesome. It was hilarious. It seemed they may be new to invading but they were quick learners. Samson finally achieved keeping two of the towers from firing each rotation by sending cavalry to reset our one troop.

Slak smashed Tornado off our throne and then he and Samson disappeared. When they did not appear in 133, we checked 277’s shore and watched in glee as they were tossed around like debris in a storm. It did not end well for 133 and ended with 277 defending their throne first.

It was not over for 133 yet. 277 returned the favor and visited them for a spell. Watching the tower hits was a lovely thing. 133 also took some big hits, one a mega rally we all knew they’d lose.

Lesson Two: Do not take a hit you are not positive you will win.

Taking a mega rally is not something you should do if you can bubble or port.

133 claimed their throne second and 207 last. We had no further visits and after the first two thrones were won we hung out in Discord mapping out our reaction to various scenarios that never happened.

It was fun and personally I was glad for a short KVK weekend. It had been a long week at work and I was exhausted even though I slept a good seven hours before KVK started.

Stay tuned!

Mega Versus Mega

There was a lot of fun to be had this final round with k64 and k394.  Most of the fun was in the beginning, after our throne was secure.  We’d intended to take k394 along with defending 207; however we didn’t have as much man power this round due to the holidays and some people had other obligations they couldn’t get out of … such as work & Easter.

This post is all about the final round of this KVK match-up.  You’ll see more YouTube coverage of the first half than anything else.  207 does not give up without a fight and we are not scared to lose troops.  Not if it means we win.  Personally I lost only 20 million power this KVK.  8% of my power.  About 90 million food to rebuild.  Or in Purls terms, 3 days of food farming.

#Easy

It was the last round of an even match up and thus far we’d taken limited losses.  In the second round I lost less than 6k power.  Win.  But since this was an easy/equal match an impossible match will likely follow.  So we decided to have a little fun before potentially taking a vacation for the next two months.

Because the 25th KVK round marks an “anniversary” of a sorts; let’s provide some statistics:

  • We’ve lost our throne only 6 times and never lost all three rounds of any match.
  • We’ve conquered all kingdoms every round in 3 separate matchups.  9 rounds total.
  • We’ve won every other defense of home.  A total of 10 rounds.  You can’t always conquer but you can defend.

So our win percentage is 76%.  And we’ve always had the same king.

#Baaaaaaaaaaaaaa

– inside joke

Defending k207 and Invading k394

So we started in 207 of course because why you wouldn’t secure your home throne before invading…

Over the six weeks we were “at war” with k64 and k394 I maintained contact with several people in each.  Some would scout or attack my towers during the event and we’d swap friendly PMs.  If you’re ever in KVK with me – I’ll accept your contact if you’ll be pleasant.

One such person is DarkQueen.  You may have seen a shoutout to her in my KVK 24 post @DQ.  Her kingdom was a mess when we started our invasion the first round.  My spy joined her alliance as they were not aligned with the king.  Long story short they had a bully that collected tax of resources every week – per stronghold in an alliance.  They were a divided mess.  Not unusual.

They managed to pull together in the last round and I was happy to see it.  It’s a game and war is war and friends are friends.  The bully is gone and they are more united as a result.  I wish them the best in their future KVK rounds.  I will be watching you.

She got me good.  I even saw the speed but as usual you click in just the wrong spot and you’re delayed and boom.  Losses.  No worries.  I should have worried less about the spam attacks and scouts which are important when you’re like me and don’t want to be speed hit on your castle.

#GoodOneDarkQueen

Our goal was to start with k394 to start.  Same drill as last time.  First slak reset k64 and we started our invasion!  We held it down a bit but soon discovered that due to unfortunate circumstances me and Dew (GH) in the forest alone with an absent king on a mega garrisoned throne and only three towers manned by online peeps and we managed it for several hours.

So when they started taking towers we couldn’t reset we had to reevaluate.  People have real lives and believe me when I say that Slak, Dew, and I have soloed plenty of invasions – in terms of being the only ones online.  Trying to stay awake.

#BondingMoments

So we withdrew from k394 and waited until 207 was secure – or just abouts.  Doesn’t matter to us.  The longer we make the other kingdoms wait the more attrition affects them.  Doesn’t affect us.  The Core Team ensures their availability the entire KVK weekend.  If we must step away it is discussed ahead of time and worked into the plans.  We went into this one knowing that we may be able to take two at once; however if one at a time was required we were prepared.

So when our fearless king returned he went to play with towers in k64.  Because both kingdoms had mega garrisoned we had set up plans to mega rally both – one after the other.  Dewand I joined slak in firing on their throne.  Three towers firing every four minutes.  It vaporizes 1% of the power in the throne equally among all reinforcers per tower hit.

We were going to mega them anyways so we added a little insult to injury.  We didn’t put ourselves in harm’s way, just let them hit us with all sorts of spells that were soon realized as wasted.

FYI Defending Kingdoms – Don’t Waste Spell Power:

  • Angel of Death only affects wounded troops and only a stupid KVK team doesn’t heal after each loss.  #Waste
  • Doom Flame can be ported out of.  We were going to port to k394 anyways before it ticked off.  #Waste
  • Antiport does not work if the other kingdom we’re invading is open.  We can’t port home or anywhere in the kingdom we were frozen in, but we can port directly to k394 which is where we were heading anyway.  #Waste

Mega Rally vs. Mega Garrison x 2

Resetting k64 and k394

Some important points – we weren’t thinking when we all popped life preserver.  Don’t do this.  Only the rally leader needs to because mega means you get the leader’s stats – which includes this talent.  #Duh  we realized this seconds after we popped it

Really that was the action.  k394 kept the scouts, attacks, rallies and such going for a few hours and then it tapered and stopped.  The last six hours was boring.

#Attrition

We decided that because we had to do one at a time that we’d take a breather and sleep.  The Core Team is in different time zones and we decided to invade k64 ten hours after we wrapped up k394.  Of course they were reset strategically to allow for extra time.  They’d taken a lot of losses and while they still had troops it wasn’t enough to be a threat.

We hoped for some excitement and got it.  They lasted longer than k394.  I apparently attracted most of the nonsense attacking.  Someone let their farm’s bubble fall and I took them out – this person’s main was devoted to my tower the rest of the invasion.

Every chance they got they took.  Several towers were taken by @Evil Hellcat and @KALLE … and their farms were marching behind them.  Of course it was just Dew, Dude, and myself all alone playing with towers at this time.  I had to give our muscle a buzz – as prearranged.

Of course after that it was over.  In fact Game mega garrisoned the throne and slak took over North and East Tower and I took over South and West.  Game wasn’t available and they weren’t going to shake his garrison – we had enough people online to stack it if necessary.  Better to have tower teams online.  Since k64 had given up at that point it was just a matter of staying entertained.

Scrubalotimus was back as promised!  However our Unicorn Police followed him to k64 and ported him out of the forest before he reset the throne.  It was comical.  We have fun and things like this aren’t something you see everyday.  k64 I hope you enjoyed the show.

And that is it.  Another KVK done.

KVK Planning + FAQ

Okay, so this week I was up an hour early for KVK. A bit grumpy on four hours of sleep but up and awake. I’ll admit I’m annoyed at KVK planning. So I kinda half-assed this one. Sorry. Hindsight I spent so much time in mail explaining stuff for the umpteenth time that I regret not detailing every little thing.

These are the FAQ in Mail, Alliance Chat, and Discord maybe a few by me lol
Who am I reining? Where do I port? What troops am I sending? Do I need to bubble? Should I buff? Why are you sending my reins back? Hello, is anyone going to get that tower? Should I take this hit or bubble? What do you mean by minimal troops?

So I like to prepare mails to people in certain roles so they know. Down to troops to send based on the tiers they have. Shore to port to (invading) and Tower to hold (anywhere). It is highly organized and usually VERY smooth.

#ObviouslyMailsDidTheJob

#PurlsRegretsNotPlanning

So what does planning involve? I’m not sure what other kingdoms do but I visit every alliance that helps with KVK to Mail All. Usually a general plan and call for troops to defend home and invade. I also ask for peoples availability.

I get a lot of responses. Sometimes more sometimes less. I spreadsheet them and assign a role (throne, tower, reins) and assign a kingdom. I base assignments off when people are available. Certain roles have stat requirements such as being unbubbled in another kingdom.

Others have no stat requirements such as stacking a mega throne. For reins I like people with stats to boost defenses on those strongholds and this role favors people who are available only initially or when we invade.

It works well.  Then you have the handful of people that just *show up* with no courtesy head’s-up.  That gives me more stress than anything.  Like, why couldn’t you just say – I may come or I’m thinking about it.  So there is pressure to put these people in a role or fear they’ll be bored and never come again.

All in all we do well.  We have fun.  Discord makes the world go round.

I’ve taken a bit if video from the highlights of our current KVK.  It’ll take a while to create a highlight video

Invading Kingdoms

See the thing about being able to break antiport is it generally requires three open kingdoms.  However this does not apply if your home kingdom is already closed and you are spelled in another.   You cannot port home but you can port to the other open kingdom.  There was fifteen minutes left on the k394 throne so he ported there and back to k64.  It was comical.

Bad Start

I slept in.  I was quite upset with my wake up call and that my comrades had waited until 45 mins after bubble drop to give me a buzz on Line Chat.  I had been up the day before since 7am and went to sleep around 3am – KVK starting at 6am for me.  I’m up an hour before KVK starts and had planned on a 2 hour nap. Not a good start to invading kingdoms.

I obviously slept through my alarm and I assume GH turned his off in error rather than snooze.  I also missed a few Lines and text messages.  I immediately jumped out of bed and jumped on Discord and logged into my account.

I let my teammates have it.  They decided it was better for me to sleep as I earned it and I wasn’t needed until 45 mins after (true) bubble drop.  That I’d done all the hard planning work and everyone knew what to do.  Except in our first invasion.  NO ONE ported to the right shore and people were just everywhere!

Forgivable sure if I had not sent the roadmap for where people should be, who they should rein or would be reined by, etc. before I took my “nap”.  Really I’d had about 3 hours of sleep and I’m a huge control freak.  Yes, I admit it.  And in our previous 23 KVK events so far I have NEVER been LATE!

Sigh.

I’m over it.  Got over it rather quickly.  Lack of sleep.  I’ve played with these people for almost a year.  Abouts.  All forgiven on all sides as what is a slight grumpiness between friends?

Side note, we ranked #10 overall globally for Alliance Power.  This reset just after KVK started so this is accurate considering others also acquired a lot of power for KVK purposes.  Very proud of our team!  Go 207 ♡

King of Avalon_2018-03-17-11-02-06.png

Conquering K394

So the k394 was uneventful.  I logged into my spy there and reviewed KC and AC.  I have a host alliance who is against the king’s alliance.  Their leader was taking FULL advantage of us in their forest and she went ninja on their people left at home.  They popped their alliance bubble while battling us for the throne.  It was quite hilarious.  @DQ you rock!  Made my morning.

We chatted in Discord for a while and the first few hours flew by.  We did tackle the easier kingdom first because we were also defending k207 at the same time.  This didn’t stop k64 from attempting a reset on k207!  Twice…

Interlude in K199

k199 was part of our last match.  It was fun.  It was not an even match and we did lose our thone the first round.  And the second.  The third we got lucky and took advantage of  the k199 king being indisposed and snagged the throne in the final round of the match.

I left my spy account in k199.  I started in a host alliance against the king; however I soon made friends with him.  We’ve talked a bit after our match ended and I decided to stay in k199.  I joined their alliance and spent this KVK with them as well.  I’m only a SH 11; however I was known for my main account and my KVK experience so when I asked if I could take the South Tower that was currently empty the answer was yes.

So me as 黑玫瑰® – Black Rose ® – took South Tower with my silver dragon and a thousand or so of cavalry.  I won one attack and lost the second.  It was fun and filled in the boredom.

King of Avalon_2018-03-17-09-02-08.png

Playing with K64

We decided we wanted to try and shorten our KVK time investment by conquering k64 with just one and half hours on k207 and two hours on k394.  Great thing is k64 wasted a lot of spell power by putting an antiport on our resetter and sent a mega rally at him.  So he bubbled.  Obviously.  However he could still port so he went back to the k394.

When k207 finished there was a thirty minute gap between k207 going to k64 and those in k394 being able to.  We saved the harder kingdom for last and decided to at least reset them.

First k64 put a mega rally on our resetter; who ported in and out of his spot to break it.  Easy.  Foolish waste of spell power.  Then k64 wasted another antiport spell on our resetter and started a mega rally.

Their reaction?  To spell us with Angel of Death.  Which only works if you have wounded troops in your personal hospital.  We had none.  Those that did were minimal and even then a whole hour was available to take care of them.  At this point k394 was finishing and so we focused on where our tower people would port because k394 thought flooding would be an effective measure in round two.

Watching Paint Dry in K64

Really, that is what we did.  After our force ported in they did their obligatory scouting and sacrificing troops for the buff.  And we sat for the remaining six hours it was like watching paint dry.  So we made up fun games to entertain ourselves.  Bets.

Example: I have # troops with dragon and they are sending # troops with/out dragon and their research is % times worse than mine.  How many will they wound?  This entertained us the first few hours.

Soon flooders started disappearing.  It was like they came online and said, nope we’re not winning and I’m not bubbling, and ported home.  At this point there was zero action and porting closer to the shore was irrelevant.

When faced with hours of nothing but each other in Discord you come up with all sorts of things to pass the time.  Love my friends ♡  This of course lead to antics in k64 KC by moi fashioned by @Chris.  It was a nice stab followed by nothing as you can see.

Planning KVK 25

The last two hours was spent planning our next round.  We had taken all we learned in this second round combined with round one and started our initial planning since all the people required were already present.  We will of course have a formal meeting early next week to lay it out and discuss positions required.  Then off I’ll go on another KVK tour!

Obviously I cannot disclose these plans here; however these details will be available in my KVK 25 post.  In reality I wrote this post in the last hour – fresh on my mind and nothing better to do.

I honestly wish I had started this blog a year ago.  I thought about it.  Many times.  Better late than never?  You really haven’t missed much.  Just me finding my feet and learning the game and making new friends.

Why am I home as throne ends? Because a free port is a free port and I had 2k troops in a tower not the throne. I went home a minute early as did others. First I had to clear the tents lol. I don’t usually farm during KVK and this is why.
